THE MEET
I met CrazyTrain during spring quarter senior year of college in 2004. He was an opera major who I was officially introduced to at his solo recital. Although, truth be told, I knew him by reputation prior. I attended the recital with a mutual friend who was also in the opera program. She gave me a little inside information that all the other singers hated him. While they bandaged, babied, and bathed their vocal chords in tonics and care, CrazyTrain stayed out late, smoked cigs, and drank noxious keg beer, but still walked away with all the leads. Hardest of all for the arts community to digest was that he was (whispered tones) in a frat. He was a barrel of contradictions and a fan of raucous behavior. I liked CrazyTrain.
But of course I did because the motif of this point in my life was extremes. Extremes, maxiums, zeniths, superlatives… For example, my hair graduated from blond to bleached; my parking ticket count passed into the triple digits; the volume of my voice moved from party girl to Queen of Hearts loud; my skirt length shortened from mini to “you’re just wearing a tube top around your waist, aren’t you?”; my perpetual tan started to look sepia in pictures; and the gap between my bed time and my rise time narrowed to almost nothing. Best of all, Red Bull hired me as a brand rep and installed a fridge with unlimited product in my living room.

I’ve got a new post up on the WTF Columns page!
It’s about a re-play with an ex that occurred because of a chance encounter on the subway… Sliding Doors style:

THE MEET
I met SidePart in Tribeca on a freebie night in January 2012. I call it a freebie night because I wasn’t scheduled to be in New York, so if anything better than nothing happened, it would be a win. My best friend Riley and I were supposed to be in Chicago for the weekend, but on Friday a deluge of snow shut down the airports. Delta rescheduled us for outbound Saturday flights, with return Sunday flights, which seemed silly at best and unfeasible at worst. Unsure if we were going to accept their offer, we needed to discuss.
Coincidentally, Cece invited us for a drink, which we gladly accepted for a number of reasons 1) Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a theory that the most fun day of the year is the first snow. So even though the city had drawn the shades, we had to put on our boots and brave the slush. 2) I always show up. With bells on. When I read Yes Man, I couldn’t even kinda empathize with the main character who struggles to say YES to life’s invitations and opportunities. 3) Freebie night!
We parked ourselves at the bar of a Tribeca restaurant right near Cece’s new apartment. The place was deserted, except for a group of fellows a couple seats down from us. They sat on the opposite side of an invisible barrier constructed solely out of decorum. We girls discussed the pending Chicago trip, which naturally led to a glory days re-cap of time spent there in undergrad and grad school.
Accidentally eavesdropping on this conversation gave the boys enough amo to break down the divide. SidePart was the first to broach the subject of common schools. After playing the name game, we’d exchanged enough credentials and personal references to eliminate the buffer and converse as one group. SidePart was charming, affable, and now in possession of my phone number for a future date.

THE MEET
SpaceMan and I met via email when our mutual friend, Fischnette, set us up. It was August 2011 and I was reeling from the gut-wrenching break-up from TheBoss that our gaggle of friends still refer to as “The Divorce.” I almost cannot even write about the split-up because I suffer from a combination of PTSD and amnesia. Suffice it to say, when I moved out of our shared Ft Greene apartment, I was in a cloud of gloom thicker than the smoke from a greasy spoon kitchen fire. Fischnette came to my rescue (as always). Sitting in a little cafe in the Village, I clutched a glass of Sav Blanc and cried to her about how I would never ever ever find anyone else or get married. It was charitable of her to attend my pity party. It was down right generous of her to donate to the cause. Fischnette has a rolodex that would make Kelly Ripa salivate, so when she informed me that she was going to set me up on a date. I trusted her whole-heartedly. True to her word, two days later I got this email:

THE MEET
In the summer of 2010, I met CircleGlasses at The Princeton Club’s weekly live rooftop music program in mid-town Manhattan. I arrived early to snag a high top table in the center of the patio. It was the perfect anchor location for people to drop by, mix, mingle, and move on. While I was seat-dancing / shoulder-bopping to a little jazz, CircleGlasses came over. He briefly chatted us and then got my number before leaving. He was what I call “old world adorable” because he was wearing a dinner jacket and circular glasses at a casual evening event – in any other season we can safely assume an ascot would be fashioned around this neck. I didn’t have the heart to tell him it was no longer the 18th century.
THE FIRST DATE
CircleGlasses and I texted over the weekend and set a date for Monday. But there was just one thing I had missed…

THE MEET
I met Armageddon in the summer of 1998, the summer of laceless keds and cut off shorts. He was my childhood friend’s new classmate at their military academy. Armageddon was tall, played hockey, and drove a Chevy Blazer – this combination is like Minnesota-girl kryptonite. There were a few group hang-outs where we watched Tommy Boy and played foosball in the basement of our friend’s house. Then, one day, he looked up my number in the telephone book, called my parent’s landline, and asked me out on a date to see Armageddon in the movie theatres. Yes, this post is going old school retro.
THE FIRST DATE
Personally, I felt I had so much riding on this date because it wasn’t just my first date with Armageddon. It’s my first date EVER. In life.

THE MEET
I met PickleBack in May of 2010. It was a Saturday and my dear, dear friends got engaged that morning. To celebrate, we sailed and drank champagne all afternoon. Appropriately, all the other girls were wearing sweetheart sundresses, so I’m not really sure why I was dressed like the blonde lady in Jurassic Park, but I was. Once we got back to solid land, the party carried on at a local bar. As soon as news spread that we were celebrating an engagement, felicitations in the form of champagne toasts and shots arrived in our direction. One rather handsy gentlemen, let’s call him PickleBack, said I had nice legs and proffered pickle-backs. (This is a shot of whiskey followed directly by a shot of pickle juice.) I was glowing with Jameson and compliments, so I gave him my number.
